But the MuVo N200 has the perfect combination of size, capacity and price to make it an excellent value. Nor does the N200 have the kind of capacity necessary for storing an entire music collection, as does an iPod or a Sony Network Walkman. ![]() Creative Labs' offering is not the smallest player on the market: Virgin Pulse's VP-1100 is significantly smaller. The player runs for 15 hours on a single AAA battery, making an unfavorable comparison to iRiver's iFP-795, which boasts a battery life of "up to 40 hours on one AA." It's also worth mentioning that the included earphones are mediocre. The menu wheel requires a lot of clicking to get from one mode to another, making it somewhat cumbersome to switch from playing music to listening to the radio, for instance. The N200 does have a few elements that could use improvement. The delete functionality is also notable: If you don't have your computer around but want to delete a song from your playlist, it can very easily be done on the player. Another nice feature is the voice recorder. You can record directly to the device from FM radio as well. It also has an FM tuner so you can listen to the radio sometimes the sound quality isn't great, but it's usually acceptable. A line-in recording jack permits you to copy CDs, MiniDiscs and even LPs directly into the device without using a computer as intermediary. The MuVo N200 combines several nice features that are uncommon among small digital music players on the market. The player is compatible with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0, allowing for very fast music transfers. The 512-MB version holds 16 hours of music in Microsoft's Windows Media format, or 8 hours in MP3 format. Were it any smaller, you would constantly misplace it. All these devices have similar exteriors, weighing just over 1 ounce, with battery, and are slightly bigger than a matchbox (1.32 by 2.58 by 0.51 inches). One of them is MuVo N200 from Creative Labs, which comes in eight different colors and with three different storage capacities: 256 megabytes, 512 MB and 1 gigabyte. There are much smaller and lighter players out there that will easily hold enough music to get you through a marathon without listening to the same song twice. If you enjoy listening to music while running, for example, the iPod is just bulky enough that it may not be for you. The iPod is not the only player on the market, and it's definitely not the easiest to use. If you're not interested in taking the beaten path of Apple Computer's iPod, which was updated this week, there are indeed so many companies with different models that choosing a player can be a challenge. It's not lack of choice that is the problem when trying to choose a digital music player, it's rather the opposite. ![]()
